A hermit crab has outgrown his cozy shell and, a bit nervously, sets out to find a new home. He finds a nice, big one, but it is plain and bare. To make it feel like home, he travels across the ocean floor and asks different sea creatures to help him decorate and protect it.
As the months pass, the crab gathers new friends, and his shell becomes a beautiful home decorated with a sea anemone, a starfish, a sea urchin, and other sea life. But as the year comes to an end, the hermit crab realizes that he has outgrown this shell, too.
He is sad to leave his friends behind, but he finds a new, even bigger shell—and a smaller hermit crab to move into his old one. The crab realizes that while change can be scary, it also brings new adventures and opportunities for new friendships.
